The word candy has developed a bizarre, yet understandable, association with tooth decay. Hence, whenever anyone makes mention of candied food, you immediately start thinking of it as junk that is going to harm your teeth and your overall health. This is not necessarily true. Candied sweet potatoes are anything but detrimental for your health. This is a unique holiday dish that is as delicious as it is healthy. A lot of people think that potatoes are not a very healthy vegetable to snack on. Those people are wrong. Just because fried potato chips are harmful for you does not mean that having boiled, baked or grilled potatoes is going to put your health in jeopardy.
Sweet Potatoes and Regular Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are not the same as regular potatoes. You will often hear people talk about swapping regular potatoes with sweet potatoes in an attempt to eat healthier. However, the swap does not really make much of a difference. Both regular potatoes and sweet potatoes have plenty of health benefits on offer for those who consume them. However, sweet potatoes bring a completely different flavour profile to the table, which is why they are often preferred over sweet potatoes. This is particularly true when it comes to candied sweet potatoes. The depth of flavour in this simple, humble, southern side dish is nearly indescribable in words.
Sweet Potatoes Have Great Nutritional Content
If you want to figure out whether a particular vegetable meets your health criteria or not, you should take a look into its nutritional value or nutritional content. Sweet potatoes are packed with all the nutrients that your body could desire. In fact, sweet potatoes are even more nutritious than yams. A cup of sweet potatoes can provide you with 65% of your daily requirement for Vitamin C. That same cup of sweet potatoes can give you more than 700 times recommended daily allowance of Vitamin A. Safe to say, people who consume sweet potatoes on a regular basis will never suffer from Vitamin A deficiency. In addition to these, sweet potatoes are enriched with beta-carotene, folate, potassium and calcium.
Great for Your Health

Making Candied Sweet Potatoes
List of Ingredients:
To make candied sweet potatoes, you need to procure 5 simple ingredients.
● 6 yellow-fleshed sweet potatoes (medium sized)
● Half a cup of butter
● 1 cup of packed brown sugar
● Half a cup of water
● 1 tsp of salt
Start by pre-heating the oven to 375 degrees. Next, take all the sweet potatoes and place them in a steamer. There must be a couple of inches of boiling water inside the steamer. Cover the lid and cook the sweet potatoes for 30 minutes. They must develop a tender texture within these 30 minutes. Drain the water and rest the sweet potatoes.
Once cooled, peel and slice the sweet potatoes into half inch slices. Place the sliced vegetables in a 9 x 13 inch baking dish.
Put a saucepan on medium heat. Melt the butter and add the brown sugar, water and salt. Once the sauce has become bubbly and the sugar has been dissolved, pour the mixture over the potatoes in the baking dish.
Now bake the potatoes for an hour at least in the oven. You are advised to occasionally coat the sweet potatoes in brown sugar sauce.
