The second group of people consist of those who can be regarded as health fanatics. These people are more interested in riding the wave of modern trends and letting the world know that they are healthy than actually focusing on picking the right foods for their balanced diet. If you have met a health fanatic or if you have read a blog written by one, then you are probably aware of the fact that such people have strong distaste for white rice and an unwavering affinity for brown rice. This makes you wonder, is white rice bad for you?

The Brown Rice Vs White Rice Debate

Food fanatics spend years thinking that brown rice is the better option. They eat up lies and fabricated information posted on the internet that are intended to expose the so called health risks of consuming white rice. The reality of the situation is that there is absolutely nothing wrong with having white rice. As a matter of fact, white rice has plenty of health benefits to offer. Brown rice on the other hand can make you feel bloated and sluggish. These are problems that you will usually not experience after eating white rice. The nutty flavour of brown rice can surely be appreciated, but it is nowhere near as comforting as having as simple bowl of plain white rice.

The Truth about Brown Rice and Why White Rice is Better

Information on brown rice being the better and healthier choice is nothing more than a part of the agenda to promote pseudo healthy products. These agendas are driven by commercial motives. It is hard for a product like brown rice to compete with its white counterpart in terms of taste. Hence, manufacturers come up with all kinds of “health benefits” to make brown rice look like the much healthier option between the two. That is acceptable to some extent. What is certainly disappointing and unacceptable is how the fans of brown rice have been vilifying white rice in recent times and spreading fears of illness and health complications in the minds of those who consume white rice on a regular basis.

Phytic Acid

The health fanatics will go on and on about the benefits of eating the whole grain. They will speak in detail about the nutritional value of brown rice and other grains located in the outer layers such as the bran. The problem with this is that the nutritional values being spoken of are locked up with phystic acid. This chemical substance is known to combine with useful minerals. When it does, the nutritional values of brown rice are rendered quite useless in the human body.

Fibre

This brings us to fibre. Brown rice has a lot more fibre on offer than plain white rice. This is supposed to be a good thing, right? Not necessarily. Even though fibre has been dubbed as the miracle food for everything from constipation to colon cancer, it is actually quite easy to consume too much of it, which can be detrimental for your health. When too much fibre is consumed, you can expect the intestinal tract to be stretched out of the normal range and the beneficial bacteria in the gut to be destroyed.

In addition to that, excess fibre in the body can lead to digestive problems such as gas, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, Chrohn’s disease. What is really ironic here is that these are the very conditions that fibre is meant to heal. As long as you are having seasonal fruits and veggies, you are getting enough amounts of fibre supplied to your body. Since white rice is low on fibre, you will not be at risk of suffering from any of these health complications by eating too much white rice.

Polyunsaturated Oils

From what we have learned, plain white rice is already 2-0 up against brown rice. The score’s going to become 3-0 as we discuss the topic of polyunsaturated oils. This substance can be found in the germ layer of the grain. For those of you who are not aware, this is an unstable fat. In other words, there is a high possibility that it can go rancid by the time brown rice reaches your plate. Hence, the better option is to consume rice that does not contain polyunsaturated oils. In other words, white rice is the better option in this regard.

At the end of the day, we just want you to be honest to yourself. The risks of health complications associated with eating white rice are much less than those associated with consuming brown rice. Unless you really prefer the taste and texture of brown rice (which you probably don’t), there is no need for you to force feed this grain down your throat. White rice is not bad for you, regardless of what the health fanatics have to say about it.
